The Broome Aboriginal Short Stay Accommodation Facility (BASSAF) is under construction, which is progressing well.
The project is an innovative response to meet the needs of visitors from remote communities and will provide between 80 and 100 beds of short term (less than 28 days) accommodation for Aboriginal people visiting Broome.
With over 200 remote Aboriginal communities in the Kimberley region, Broome is a regional hub for many visitors and residents often visit the town to access medical and social services, attend to cultural and family business and access amenities including shopping and socializing, only available within larger regional centres,
The BASSAF will offer a range of accommodation including single, double and family units, ablution and laundry facilities, a dining and recreation room, an administration and reception centre and manager’s quarters, all set in landscaped gardens.
Located on the corner of Dickson Drive and Pembroke Road, the facility is owned by Nyamba Buru Yawuru and will be leased on a long term lease to the Housing Authority.
The overall architecture and landscape will create a sense of belonging, community and a culturally appropriate identity for Aboriginal people from all over the region.
The BASSAF will be fully operational in the first half of 2018.
